The Warm Glow of Simplicity: Beeswax Candles & How to Make Your Own Rolled Ones

There’s a certain kind of peace that comes from working with your hands—especially when what you’re making is something simple, beautiful, and useful. That’s how I feel every time I sit down to craft beeswax candles. Whether it’s the sweet, honeyed scent of the wax or the quiet rhythm of the process, it always reminds me to slow down and appreciate the little things.

Why Beeswax?

To us, beeswax isn’t just a candle ingredient—it’s a gift from the hive, and one of the purest, most natural ways to bring warmth and light into a home. Every sheet of beeswax we use holds the essence of our farm: the wildflowers blooming in the pasture, the hum of busy wings in summer, and the golden glow of hard work made sweet.

Unlike paraffin wax—which is derived from petroleum and can release toxins like benzene and toluene when burned—pure beeswax burns clean. It doesn’t pollute your indoor air or add synthetic fragrances to your space. Instead, it offers a light, natural honey scent and even helps purify the air by releasing negative ions that can bind to dust and allergens. It’s ideal for homes where clean air and natural living matter.

We also love that beeswax burns longer and brighter than many other waxes, giving off a warm, golden flame that feels like sunshine in a jar. It’s the kind of light that makes dinner feel more special, baths more calming, and evenings just a little cozier.

And from a sustainability standpoint, it’s hard to beat. Beeswax is a renewable resource, and by using wax from our own hives (or from local beekeepers who prioritize the health of their bees), we can ensure that nothing goes to waste. After the honey is harvested, we gently collect the leftover wax, clean it by hand, and turn it into something beautiful and useful—a candle with purpose.

To us, that’s what makes beeswax the best choice. It supports our bees, aligns with our values, and brings a little everyday magic into the lives of the people who burn it.

Hand-Rolled Candles: A Simple, Beautiful Tradition

Rolled beeswax candles are one of the easiest—and most satisfying—ways to make candles at home. There’s no melting, no molds, and no fancy equipment. Just warm wax sheets, a bit of wick, and your hands. It’s a lovely project to do with kids, and it makes the most charming gifts (or keepsakes to enjoy on quiet evenings).

You don’t have to be crafty to try it. In fact, it might be the most forgiving DIY you’ll ever do.

DIY Rolled Beeswax Candles

You’ll Need:

  • Beeswax sheets (one per candle)

  • Cotton wick (cut about 1–2” longer than your wax sheet width)

  • A ruler & scissors

  • A flat, warm surface (a sunny windowsill or warm room helps soften the wax)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the Wick: Place your wick along the short edge of the beeswax sheet. Let it extend slightly beyond the top and bottom.

  2. Start Rolling: Press the wax gently around the wick and begin rolling tightly, keeping the edge straight as you go.

  3. Seal the Edge: Once rolled, press the seam gently with your fingers to seal. If the wax is stiff, warm it slightly with your hands or a hairdryer on low.

  4. Trim the Wick: Leave about ¼ inch sticking out of the top.

  5. Light and Enjoy!

They burn slow and clean, giving off a cozy, golden light. One of my favorite ways to use them is tucked into vintage brass holders on the dinner table or lined up on the windowsill at dusk.

Life on the Farm This Spring

This time of year always brings a sense of renewal. We’ve spotted the bees zipping around the first dandelions and fruit blossoms, eagerly searching for nectar and pollen after a long winter’s rest. The garden is stretching its arms as green shoots begin to poke through the soil, and our little orchard trees are budding with the promise of warmer days ahead.

In the barn, we’re watching closely for the arrival of baby goats—always a highlight of spring on the farm. Their tiny bleats and playful hops fill the space with joy, reminding us why we do what we do. These first signs of life and color remind us that no matter how long winter feels, spring always shows up—often quietly, and then all at once.

New Offerings Coming Soon

We’re working on expanding our beeswax product line to include more pure beeswax options—starting with our handmade rolled beeswax candles and DIY kits. Whether you’d like to try your hand at making your own or prefer to enjoy a finished pair crafted here on the farm, we can’t wait to share them with you.

Coming Next Month…

In the next blog, we’ll be sharing a peek into our goats’ milk soap making process—how our Nigerian Dwarf goats help supply this creamy goodness, and why we believe in keeping things simple, nourishing, and close to home.

Until then, may your days be full of light, laughter, and maybe a little beeswax on your hands.

With warmth from the farm,

Marci Swift
